Bike rides and walking trails in South Vendée

Here, you realise that the Vendée was designed for slow holidays. The kind where you move at the pace of the tyres on the road. Cycle path, or the rhythm of your footsteps on a sandy path. At Camping MAEVA Club Les Préveils, you don't need to plan an expedition to feel like you're in the great outdoors: the campsite is set in a pine forest, like a little village under the trees, and the footpaths go right past.

At reception, there's a card, a little crumpled from being shown: the easy curls, “the ones everyone likes”. It's especially useful when families ask for “something simple, not too long, with a nice break”. And that's exactly what these Bike rides and walking trails in South Vendée accessible fresh air, without the need for a sporting performance.

Cycling along the coast: from La Grière to the Port de l'Aiguillon, the Vendée in panoramic mode

The first itinerary to fall in love with because it's so easy is the ride to La Grière. It takes around 3 km, or 10 to 15 minutes of leisurely cycling. The path is often shaded by pine trees, the air is fresher and the ocean is never far away. It's perfect for a “no-pressure” morning, just to get the feel of the place, and find a spot to put your towel down later.

For a longer outing, head for the Port de l'Aiguillon-sur-Mer: around 12 km, or 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on your pace and photo breaks. What's interesting is the change of scenery: you'll glide between the coast and more maritime areas, and you'll feel the oyster-farming atmosphere, seeing basins, huts and oyster beds. Sophie, who often deals with “cycling” information at the campsite, gives the simplest advice: “Leave in the morning, take a windbreaker and plan a tasting at the port. A plate of seafood or a few oysters in front of the water is an instant holiday treat.

The terrain here helps a lot: it's generally flat, so it's accessible to children and “Sunday” cyclists. As a family, you can divide up the ride: 6km out, break, 6km back. And for those who prefer walking, there are a number of coastal paths that allow you to do 1 to 2 hour loops, perfect in the late afternoon when the light turns golden.

These Bike rides and walking trails in South Vendée are not an activity “Plus: it's a way of discovering the coast in a different, closer and truer way.

Marshes, reserves and wide open spaces: walk to observe, cycle to breathe

La Pointe d’Arçay Nature Reserve is one of the names that comes up a lot when people talk about the wilderness around La Tranche. It's a precious space: dunes, wetlands, birds... a place where you walk softly, where you whisper almost without realising it. For a simple outing, allow 1h30 to 2h30 depending on the route you choose, with a pair of binoculars if you like to observe. At the end of the day, you can sometimes spot migratory birds or furtive silhouettes in the more wooded areas.

And if you fancy a real contrast, a trip to the gateway to the Marais Poitevin (about 45 km, 50 minutes by car) offers a totally different day out: boating, canals, pollarded ash trees, green silence. It's not “next door”, but it's a great idea if you're staying for a week. You can do a morning on the beach, have a quick lunch, then head off to a pier for a 1? to 2-hour tour (prices vary, often around €10 to €15 per person depending on the option). You come back in the evening with the impression of having travelled much further.

The return to the campsite is a real bonus: a shower, the heated swimming pool to relax your legs, and the snack bar if you don't feel like cooking. And there's always the peace and quiet after 11.30pm, so you can really get some sleep.
